Thought Experiment

There was no “liberal swing” in the 60s. There was only a reaction against the government becoming measurably more conservative in every aspect, a slide that was briefly interrupted, and then only in part, by the wave election that brought Carter to power. This slide has continued unabated since then.

This theory neatly explains a number of things that would otherwise elude explanation. I’ll explore it more later.
